About Me

I’m Diana Sjödén, a potter in Melbourne. I grew up in Sweden, in a world of IKEA. Flat-pack bookshelves, the same plates as every friend’s house, all of it part of my childhood. I still have a soft spot for it. But the older I get, the more I value things made by hand, close to home, that get used every day and kept.

A friend got me into pottery during COVID, hand-building at first. I stopped for a while once we could all go outside again, then came back in 2025 and started on the wheel. It was meant to be a hobby. Now it takes up most of my weekends and a fair amount of my kitchen.

Every piece is thrown on the wheel, stamped by hand and fired at a local community kiln. I don’t have my own kiln, so each firing takes about two weeks, and I usually find out whether something worked a month after I made it. Some pieces come out better than I planned. Some don’t make it to the shop.

Where I can, I keep it local. The clay, glazes and packaging all come from Australian suppliers, and I recycle my clay scraps and trimmings back into new pieces.

I make bowls, jugs and small serving pieces in small batches, all in the same warm, matte clay colour, so what you buy now will sit well with what you add later. The shapes are simple because they’re for breakfast, a weeknight dinner, a bowl of fruit on the bench.
